Today MediaTek has launched the Helio P90 chipset which is the successor to the previously released Helio p70 chip, The new chip comes with a faster CPU, a brand new GPU which is up to 50% faster and brings much better AI and support for Google Lens and ARCore suppport.
The new chip is built on TSMC’s 12 nm FinFET process which is the same as previous gen chip, but MediaTek has improved alot on battery consumption.
The CPU is octa-core with 2x high performance Cortex-A75 cores clocked at @ 2.2 GHz and 6x battery efficient Cortex-A55 cores clocked @ 2GHz, the fast Cortex-A75 core are built with the companies new-gen DynamIQ process for the intensive work and 6 Cortex-A5 for lighter tasks and battery savings.
The GPU has been changed completely, instead of the previous gen ARM Mali-G72 MP3 clocked @ 900MHz found on the Helio p60 and Helio p70 chips MediaTek is now using the IMG PowerVR GM 9446 clocked @ 970 MHz which claimed is 50% faster.
There are a lot of significant improvements in the camera department there is support for upto a 48MP sensor or a 24MP + 16MP dual camera combo, there is support for slow motion video up to 480 fps.
The chip also has triple ISP for capturing Raw images and can produce good results in low light thanks to AI.
The processor supports Full HD+ displays with resolution up to 2520 x 1080 at 21:9 aspect ratio.
In connectivity there is no change in the modem its still the same Cat 12 600mbps download and Cat 13 150mbps upload, with 4×4 MIMO, 3CA, 256QAM and dual 4G VoLTE. The Bluetooth is now 5.0 instead of 4.2.
The new AI core is slightly faster than the previous one and clocks @624mhz instead of 525mhz, there is also an AI accelerator which will boost performance by a lot. The Helio p90’s AI processor outputs 1,127 GMACs of AI computing power which main times more than previous gen Soc’s.
Thanks to partnership with google the new platform improves on AR and MR acceleration, there is also support for the common frameworks like TF lLite, TensorFLow and Caffe2 which are based on MediaTek’s NeuroPilot SDKMediaTek is using this much performance to vastly improve on camera performance.
MediaTek has started production on the new p90 chips and will be shipped in phones starting Q1 2019.
They also said that they will update previous gen Soc’s with Google Lens and ARCore support.
